State Theatre of Bay City Ceases Operations

BAY CITY, MI, March 1, 2024 - Today the State Theatre of Bay City ceased operations after filing for Chapter 7 bankruptcy with the United States Bankruptcy Court for the Eastern District of Michigan.

"With a heavy heart, and after thoughtful discussion and consideration, the Board of Directors has authorized the filing of a Chapter 7 bankruptcy for the State Theatre," said Daniel Dimitroff, chair of the Board.

The decision comes after several months of investigation into financial issues, some of which are being investigated by the authorities. The State Theatre is not at liberty to discuss the details of the investigation while it is ongoing.

Under Chapter 7 bankruptcy, a trustee is appointed to liquidate the organization's assets to pay its debts. All upcoming events at the State Theatre have been cancelled.

The State Theatre was constructed in 1908. In 2000, the Bay City Downtown Development Authority and a group known as Friends of the State Theatre raised funds for capital improvements to the venue. Throughout the decades, the State Theatre has been committed to providing performing arts and films that enhance cultural opportunities for people in the region and beyond.

"We are grateful for the support of our community and donors over the years," Dimitroff said. "Moving forward, we will work collaboratively with the bankruptcy court and trustee to search for a new building owner. There is a lot of work ahead, but we are committed to working with the trustee to return the State Theatre to its respected role in our community."
